Gabrovo 4-5/9-21

Saturday 4 September At 10.00 we were in Phelnik where Vanja and the family live. They had planned a weekend trip with accommodation to show us different attractions. We drove approx. 4 hours to Etera in Gabrovo. A place more like a village museum that shows Bulgarian traditions. Buildings and crafts.

Furthermore, we went to Shipka which is a historic place. It was there that Bulgaria defeated the Ottomans with the help of the Russians. The Ottoman Empire – Muslim Turks – had ruled for 500 years. The liberation is celebrated every year on March 3, and is considered a national day. It was a great experience. After a nice dinner we went to the hotel in Gabrovo to sleep.

On Sunday, September 5, we were up early to start the day at the Museum of Humor in Gabrovo. It turns out that Georgi has his roots in this city that honors humor. He has a good sense of humor that man so then the pieces fell into place 🙂

The idea was that we were going to visit historical caves but there was complete chaos and stuff full, so we just had to turn around. So then we drove to Bojentsi, which is also a kind of village museum where old buildings, tools, etc. are preserved. This is also a historic place where female slaves in the Ottoman Empire fled to escape slavery. Great surroundings.

What constantly strikes us is that places and roads that seem like no man’s land, lead us to the most amazing places.

Furthermore, we drove past the village of Triavna on the way to the fortress of Veliko Ternovo. In the 16th century, the village was within the walls. Today it is a large city which is also a university city for many students.
